Driver Improvement Program (DIP)

Widmyer Driving School understands that students are often incovenienced by a DIP course requirement, so we aim to make the experience as student friendly as possible!

About the Driver Improvement Program (DIP)

The DIP is typically for:

  • drivers referred by the MVA (our class fulfills Md. MVA requirement)
  • drivers with a suspended or revoked license
  • drivers who have had a moving violation while on a provisional license
  • drivers referred by the court
  • drivers who want to voluntarily take it before a traffic court date

Price- $50

Completing the DIP

The DIP program may be completed in-person or online. The price remains at $50 regardless of which format is chosen.

If you attend the DIP program in-person, the program is 3-3 1/2 hours.

If you complete the DIP program online, there is no time requirement, and it is completed at your leisure. You then come in for a brief 20 question in-person quiz, and you are finished. Students must be 18 years of age to complete the DIP program online.

Notifying the MVA

Widmyer Driving School automatically and promptly notifies the Maryland MVA of a student's DIP completion within 24 hours if the student provides us with his/her correct Maryland license number. The student has to do nothing. The student also receives a hard copy indicating completion of the DIP program upon finishing.

What to Bring

  • MVA or court referral letter that we may keep. If you do not have this, you may still complete the program just print out and bring a copy of your online registration.
  • $50 cash or money order (no checks/no credit cards). Exact amounts please.
  • Maryland license number. If you ever had a Maryland license, you still have a Maryland license number. If you have a Maryland identification card, that number will serve as your Maryland license number. Please bring that number so we can notify the MVA of your completion.
  • photo ID  
  • pen
  • A basic understanding of spoken and written English is required.
  • your printed online Progress Report as proof of completion if you are an online student

Quiz Times, Locations, and Directions

Quiz times for online students may be viewed by selecting that option from the menu on the left of this page.. To view directions  please select Locations/Directions on the menu. You may complete the DIP in-person or online at all of our locations in the following counties:

Allegany, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Montgomery,

St. Mary's, Washington, and Wicomico. (at this time Garrett  only offers the online program)

You review the DIP class material online at your convenience then you must pass the final DIP quiz at one of our locations.

How do I complete the Driver Improvement Program (DIP)?

With our school, you have the convenience of completing the DIP program in-person or online. You may enroll or get further information for either format by clicking the registration button above. Also, you may enroll to sit through the class by calling one of our branch locations.  

How does the online DIP work?

  1. Register by clicking the button above, and log into our online system.
  2. View the class material at your own pace.
  3. Call our office or email us at widmyerdriving@aol.com to schedule a testing appointment. When scheduling a test by email, provide your full name and location in all emails.
  4. Complete the 20 question multiple choice written DIP quiz at any of our locations.
  5. Receive your completion form.  Please keep this for your records.
  6. We will electronically notify the Maryland MVA of your DIP completion. We do not notify other states or the courts of your completion.

 

What happens if I do not take the Driver Improvement Program (DIP) by my DIP due date?

If you do not take the DIP by the DIP due date, your license will be suspended.

I do not have my MVA referral letter. Can I still complete the DIP class?

Yes, you still can complete the class without the referral letter. However, you would be required to complete a waiver so that you assume responsibility for completing the correct class. Please have your Maryland driver’s license number with you so that we can notify the MVA of your completion.

Does taking the DIP remove points from my driving record?

No, in the State of Maryland, points will remain active on your driving record for 2 years from the date of your violation.

My license is suspended and I just completed the DIP. When will my suspension be lifted?

We electronically notify the MVA within 24 hours of your completion if you provided us with the correct Maryland license number.  You are also given a hard copy of your completion at the time of completion. It is up to the MVA to lift your suspension. We do not notify other states or the courts of your completion.
